LAND DRAINAGE
Turning waterlogged mossland back into workable ground
Twelve hundred metres of new field drain across a Fylde arable unit, laid to a fall you could set a spirit level to.
GROUNDWORKS & AGRICULTURAL CONTRACTING · LANCASHIRE & CUMBRIA
From the arable plain of the Fylde to the dairy country of the Eden Valley and the open fell above it, we move earth, lay drains and build the quiet infrastructure that working land depends on.
See what we do ↓ABOUT GROUNDFIRST
Groundfirst grew out of a simple frustration: too much agricultural groundwork gets treated as an afterthought, squeezed in between a housing plot and a car park by contractors who’ve never stood in a flooded field in February wondering why the drains failed.
We work Lancashire and Cumbria specifically because the land here rewards it — heavy mossland clay on the plain, thin peat on the fell, silt along the estuaries, and a climate that gives you no margin for a job done half right. Whether it’s an arable unit on the Fylde needing a grain store base, or a dairy farm in the Eden Valley rebuilding its collecting yard before the next TB test, we build what the ground and the enterprise actually need.

Field drains, attenuation ponds and watercourse work that keep mossland and fellside farms workable through the wettest Lancashire and Cumbrian winters.
↗02Subsoiling, drainage and grain store groundwork for the arable ground of the Fylde and West Lancashire plain.
↗03Collecting yards, slurry stores and handling systems built around the daily rhythm of a working dairy herd.
↗04Foundations, hardstanding and site infrastructure built to carry the weight of working land.
↗05All-weather tracks and stock-proof fencing that hold their line on open fell and low ground alike.
↗06Cut, fill and haulage at scale, with the plant and licensed tips to move it cleanly.
↗07Cable ducting, hardstanding and foundations for ground-mount solar and on-farm anaerobic digestion plant.
↗08Habitat creation, hedgerow and watercourse restoration built to meet stewardship scheme requirements.
↗A TEAM RAISED ON THE LAND
WHY GROUNDFIRST
Most of our team grew up on working farms across Lancashire and Cumbria before they ever sat in a digger — arable ground on the plain, dairy herds under the fells. That matters more than any brochure can say: we know what a slurry store has to hold, what a grain store base has to carry, and why "good enough" never quite is when the ground floods every third winter regardless.
WHERE WE WORK
Lancashire and Cumbria hold their land very differently county to county — mossland clay that won’t drain on the arable plain, thin fellside soil that won’t hold, silt along the estuary that shifts underfoot. We work all of it, which is why our designs start from the geology, not a standard spec sheet.
LAND DRAINAGE
Twelve hundred metres of new field drain across a Fylde arable unit, laid to a fall you could set a spirit level to.
DAIRY INFRASTRUCTURE
Reinforced concrete, proper falls, and a slurry handling system the whole dairy unit actually uses.
ARABLE GROUNDWORK
Footings and slab sized for a full harvest intake, levelled to erector-ready tolerance.
RENEWABLES
Cable ducting, access track and mounting foundations, coordinated around the growing season either side of it.
LAND MANAGEMENT
Environmental stewardship work built to satisfy the scheme, not just tick the box.
ACCESS TRACKS
Built up in layers, not laid on the surface — the difference shows by the second frost.
